New Family Friendly Workplace Ordinance (FFWO) Notice Available for San Francisco Employers

  27 July 2016

As of January 1, 2014, the Family Friendly Workplace Ordinance (FFWO) is in effect in San Francisco.

The FFWO requires that employers with 20 or more employees allow any employee working in San Francisco, who has been employed for six months or more by the current employer, and who is regularly employed at least eight hours per week to request a flexible or predictable working arrangement to assist with caregiving responsibilities. The employee may request the flexible working arrangement to assist with care for: a child or children under the age of eighteen; a person or persons with a serious health condition in a family relationship with the employee; or a parent (age 65 or older) of the employee. An amendment (PDF) was passed January 7th, 2014, which clarifies that a covered employer under the FFWO is an employer with 20 or more employees anywhere. Recently, San Francisco's Office of Labor Standards Enforcement issued a new FFWO Notice for employers to use in implementing the ordinance. Trend for employers to note: more workplace protections for families in the form of employee leaves and flex time.
